The Australian Football League is the top level league for the sport of Australian Rules Football. The league has 16 teams from 5 states who compete in a 22 round home and away season during the Australian winter months, which is then followed by a 4 week finals series in September, which is played by teams that finish in the top 8 on the ladder. The 4th week of the finals is the Grand Final, where 2 teams play off for the AFL Premiership, which is the ultimate prize in the sport.
